Ingredients

  • 1 lb sweet butter
  • 1½ cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 6 to 7 cups sifted flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder per cup of flour (roughly 3 to 3½ teaspoons total)

For the glaze:

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • A splash of milk

Method

Cream the butter until fluffy. Add the sugar, vanilla, eggs, and flour.

Shape the dough into cookies — traditional shapes are twists, braids, or small rings.

Glaze the tops with the beaten egg and milk mixture.

Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
